Ric Becker Masterclass

Masterclass with Ric Becker on composing for low brass

On November 7th 2020, MusicNYC’s founder and brass instructor Ric Becker gave a 1 hour masterclass to composition students at the Los Angeles Inception Orchestra. He performed excerpts of two works: Stefan Zeniuk’s El Segundo Diablo for unaccompanied bass trombone, and the tuba part from Sergei Prokofiev’s 5th symphony.

The students in the LAIO have been working on a phenomenal process called “live composing,” in 2 or more students work together (remotely, at current) with the help of an LAIO mentor to compose a short work. During Ric’s class, several groups live composed for tenor trombone and Mr. Becker played each student’s work for them, providing feedback from the perspective of a professional session musician.
